Statement

Knitting a noose, wiping blood onto an American quilt, and binding a hand-holding zine to honor a lost childhood are the essence of Aranda’s artistic practice. Aranda utilizes the historically independent and feminine mediums that are overlooked in the documented artistic canon. She situates contemporary political and social critique within historically grounded book and textile practice. Always keeping where she came from in mind, she expresses the relativity of her own experience in hopes it will force the viewer to question their own.

Artist Bio

Angelica Aranda was born and raised in New York City as a first generation American, daughter to a Dominican mother and Ecuadorian father. Aranda focuses her artistic practice on fiber arts, zine making, and bookmaking. She was a recipient of Creatives Rebuild New York’s Guaranteed Income for Artists and has received multiple grants in the pursuit of artist book research. She is a practicing librarian and typographic researcher. Aranda holds a master's in library and information science from Syracuse University and a B.A. in political science and studio art from the University of Rochester.
